The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center - James Cancer Hospital & Solove Research Institute

The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center (OSUCCC) is a $1 billion expansion of the Wexner Medical Center and was completed in 2014. The facility is a LEED Gold structure with 21 floors total, equaling over 1.1 million SF, making it the third largest cancer hospital in the country. The OSUCCC encompasses sustainable design with its water and energy efficiencies, indoor environmental quality and more.

GATE’s role in OSU ProjectOne was to provide the best quality and value of exterior precast cladding for the project.

GATE joined the team as a design-assist partner in June 2010. The erection process started in January of 2012. The project schedule could not be met without the design-assist process.

GATE began with a preliminary IGMP of $56.71 per sf on 112,927 sf and finished with 118.871 sf at $49.92 per sf — saving the owner $810,014 during the process.

The biggest challenge during the design-assist process was meeting the owner’s guidelines on budgets while maintaining the design intent of the exterior. Developing a complex yet repetitious brick design, panelizing precast to meet the limitations of the site crane capabilities while reducing the total number of panels, and design of site-applied aesthetics top the list of project challenges.
