Cherry Street Transit Facility Garage
Cherry Street Transit Facility is a 216,000 SF total precast parking structure located near Indiana State University’s campus in Terre Haute. In addition to providing much-needed parking in the city’s busy downtown community, the five-level, 636-space structure serves as a transit headquarters and bus transfer facility for the city.
Cherry Street’s exterior façade consists of architectural precast columns, spandrels, and wall panels that are load-bearing for the structural precast floor components. Brick inlay and simulated Indiana Limestone, along with arch detailing, come together to create a classic look that blends seamlessly with the city’s downtown architecture.
Because the exterior architectural precast components were load-bearing, the amount of materials required to construct the façade after the structure was erected was greatly reduced. Casting brick into the precast panels provided additional benefits including better quality control, reduced installation costs, and increased speed of construction, as well as, design flexibility, which allowed the design team to create a custom design for a fraction of the cost of traditional masonry. All of these things provided material and time savings, which reduced the project’s overall construction costs.

The total precast system not only reduced overall project costs but also reduced environmental impact. Crane work was able to be completed within the structure’s footprint for 80% of the installation’s duration, the precast components were stored off-site so no additional handling areas outside of the structure’s footprint were needed, and fewer on-site trades were required; thus, reducing disruption to surrounding areas.
Installation of both architectural and structural components was completed in 80 days. The overall construction duration was 455 days.
