Louisiana Offshore Oil Port (LOOP) Headquarters Building and Parking Garage

Louisiana Offshore Oil Port (LOOP) Headquarters Building and Parking Garage

In 2005, LOOP (Louisiana Offshore Oil Port); decided to relocate their office complex to a more inland location after their office was damaged by Hurricane Katrina.

The two-story 40,000 SF office building and 100-car parking garage sit 21.5 feet above sea level to guard against flooding and are supported by 283 prestressed piles. Utilizing precast concrete enabled the entire project to be constructed in just over 12 months from start to finish. The construction time would likely have been longer with other building systems. Power outages associated with Hurricane Katrina and 50 rainy days caused delays; however, the project was finished on time and on budget.

The owner desired a material that would be storm-resistant, energy efficient, durable and most importantly, reflect the character and detailing of "Old" New Orleans. Initially, brick and stone were considered for the project, but precast concrete quickly became the natural choice for the critical facility with its strength, versatility and stone-like appearance.

"Aesthetically, precast concrete provided the flexibility for varying the color and textures to replicate the appearance of travertine, limestone and split-stone in a monolithic panel at an affordable cost."

Internally, insulated precast concrete panels provided a complete barrier system with an R-value two times greater than code required; thus, providing greater energy efficiency. The system also simplified the construction time and budget of the project.

For LOOP, precast concrete was the right choice to provide a timeless, tasteful and secure solution for its new headquarters, and for its employees and visitors who both remark, “It’s a showplace.”
