Newly Announced ‘DEX by GATE’ Targets UHPC and Terrazzo Market

The July 1 acquisition of Atlanta’s DEX Industries by GATE Precast has created “DEX by GATE,” a new division offering a complementary interior package of precast concrete.

ATLANTA, GA, July 1, 2021 – In a move that considerably expands the offerings of both companies, GATE Precast has acquired the assets of DEX Industries in Atlanta, GA, effective July 1.

The acquisition creates a newly branded GATE division – “DEX by GATE” – that will operate within DEX Industries’ facility. The acquisition allows the two companies to offer a significantly enhanced product selection to their customer base.

Founded in 1999 by Craig Smith and interior designer Lauriel Leonard, DEX is one of the pioneers of designer concrete, offering concrete with vastly improved material characteristics over what has historically been available for use in architectural designs. Predominant materials include ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) and terrazzo.

Dean Gwin, president and COO of GATE Construction Materials Group, says it’s a natural fit. “We are incredibly excited about the potential of the combination of DEX lightweight polished products for both interiors and exteriors combined with the growing GateStone, GateLite and GateStructures line of products,” Gwin says. “I’ve known Craig and Lauriel for years and have admired their creativity and quality. We are happy they will continue to manage the operation.”

DEX by GATE offers an extensive array of finishes, shapes and functions for interior and exterior built environments. “I’m excited about the opportunity to collaborate with the GATE team, and look forward to working together in an exciting industry and growing our product lines into new markets,” Smith says.
